About Blog and Author

This blog was created on 14th April 2023 by Ravi S. Iyer (author). Previously I had created  posts related to Thuravoor Narayana Shastrigal (TNS) on another blog of mine: ravisiyer.blogspot.com . On 14th April 2023, I copied all the posts with content mainly on TNS, to this blog. The corresponding old posts of ravisiyer.blogspot.com inform readers about this move and provide the associated post from this blog as a link.

Thuravoor Narayana Sasthrigal (or Shastrigal / Sasthrikal / Sastri / Sasthri / Shastri ) is my great-grandfather (my mother's father's father). I think the key Sanskrit word for the last name is a honorific - शास्त्री . See Sanskrit version of https://sanskrit.nic.in/shastri.php to see the Sanskrit word in Devanagari (Sanskrit) script. From English version of same page, "Shastri" is the examination conducted by Central Sanskrit University (previously Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan) of Govt. of India, which is equivalent to "B.A /B.A (Hons.)" "EXAMINATION" "IN THE MODERN SYSTEM OF EDUCATION".

So शास्त्री or Shastri even today is the honorific associated with a Sanskrit knowledgeable person.

I think in Malayalam the letters corresponding to "kal" or "gal" are attached as an additional term of respect leading to Shastrikal or Shastrigal words and other similar words.

The last name of Thuravoor Narayana Sasthrigal (referred to as TNS) has been spelt in a variety of different ways in Latin (English language) script in books, articles and websites. Even the first name has been spelt in two different ways - Thuravoor or Turavur.

For the spelling used in the blog address (url) as well as its title, I decided to use what I consider to be an important, even if limited, source about status achieved by TNS in his life. That is "H.H. THE MAHARAJA'S GOVT SANSKRIT COLLEGE", "THIRUVANANTHAPURAM", which has a board showing the "SUCCESSION LIST OF PRINCIPALS". In this board, the 3rd entry is:

"3 THURAVOOR NARAYANA SASTHRIGAL 1909-1911". For more including a picture of this board, please see my blog post: My great-grandfather Thuravoor Narayana Sasthrigal, noted Sanskrit scholar in grammar, and principal of Govt. Sanskrit College, Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) from 1909-1911, https://tnarayanasasthri.blogspot.com/2023/04/my-great-grandfather-thuravoor-narayana.html .

For the blog address, I decided to trim the name slightly and so the address is: tnarayanasasthri.blogspot.com . The title of the blog is TNS name as spelt in above list of principals board in Maharaja's Govt. Sanskrit College - Thuravoor Narayana Sasthrigal.

The various ways in which Thuravoor Narayana Sasthrigal name are, or may be, written in English are:

Thuravoor (or Turavur ) Narayana Sasthrigal (or Shastrigal / Shasthrigal / Sasthrikal / Sastrikal / Shastrikal / Shasthrikal / Sastri / Sasthri / Shastri / Shasthri )

Additionally Thuravoor Narayana Sasthrigal is, or may be, also referred to using these variants in English language:

R. Narayana Sastri (or Sasthrigal / Shastrigal / Shasthrigal / Sasthrikal / Sastrikal / Shastrikal / Shasthrikal / Sasthri / Shastri / Shasthri )

The ways in which Thuravoor Narayana Sasthrigal name are, or may be, written in Malayalam and Sanskrit are:

തുറവൂർ നാരായണ ശാസ്ത്രി

तुरवूर नारायण शास्त्री
